Live Blog of the River City Rivalry

6:52- Ugh what a boring day for sports this turned out to be, the Pens game was crazy boring and I had to listen to the Pitt blowout of IUP on the radio. It's just going to be me tonight and I'm not looking forward to this at all. I have no idea how this is going to turn out.

7:29- Thank you ESPN Classic for finally putting the game on. Nippert Stadium looks to be rocking.

7:31- I like this early playcalling

7:35- I had a bit of a heart attack with that fumble but other than that it is a fantastic drive. This is as good as the offense has looked all season. Absoultely fantastic playcalling and execution.

7:38- That was amazing. I'm excited now and Shady is showing how much ahead he is of the rest of the Big East.

7:43- Wow. Fantastic special teams play by I think Hobby on the tackle. Lets get another score.

7:46- Not so good but still no turnover and that is something good. Great punt from Brytus there.

7:55- The Bearcats keep coming up with these big conversions but the defense is playing solid. This drive has felt like 4 hours long.

7:59- Do yourself a favor and buy a case of Labatt Blue to get the free Pens hat they are putting in the cases of bottles. The beer is very good times and the hats are extremely warm. Also they have the blue alternate Pens colors so I'm always a fan of that.

8:02- Badly blown coverage on that play but not a horrible defensive drive. Cinci is playing well this is going to be a close game.

8:08- Not a good drive at all. Pinkston flat out blew it on that sack. Terrible punt too to cap it off. Shady needs to take the game over and dominate like he can.

8:15- Fantastic defensive stand and what was the deal with that guy getting hit in the ass. The offense needs to get it back in gear this drive. I would love to see some Wildcat.

8:21- That drive was a microcasm of what the problem on offense is, the QB can't make all the throws. Baldwin was 2 steps past his corner and Stull floated a punt to him and the pass on the sideline had nothing on it so the receiver drifted out. Ugh we need a couple big runs on offense.

8:30- Terrible play by Thatcher right there. He jumped a route he couldn't possibly have stopped. When you have safeties that have no idea where to be in the passing game its going to be problems.

8:33- Just horrible coverage and the problem is the safeties. Thatcher is playing the worst game of his career and that is saying something. The offense needs to get this score back.

8:39- No good at all. Stull is off on every single pass and that is whats to be expected I guess. Wildcat Wildcat Wildcat.

8:49- Good job on the defensive end. I'm getting more and more impressed with Romeus.

8:51- Oklahoma's D looks absolutely amazing. Back to back sacks on Harrell, that is probably the only time that sentence will ever be written.

9:13- Bob Davey is amazing as a color guy. He explains the most obvious things in long form poetry style. Atrocious defensive gameplan coming out in the second half. The secondary and everybodies favorite walk-on Austin Ransom caused this touchdown.

9:21- Bob Davey and me need to hangout. He speaks english like it is translated english to spanish then back to french. I always assumed he was a bad coach because of how awful ND was under him but he is very dumb.

9:28- A little sidebar here, I'm trying to ignore the game, I watched the jersey retiremnet ceremony of Patrick Roy tonight and if you were a hockey fan in the 90s watch it. The best goaltender of all time getting his recognition. Look it up on youtube tomorrow it is fantastic.

9:35- This is going to be the biggest series of Wanny's time at Pitt. Points are needed badly here.

9:38- Stull really needs to understand that throwing the ball crazy high isn't advisable.

9:45- Pike has been great as a shout out to Johnny but this game is a referendum on the problems our coaching staff has. We still live in this world that teams can only play a certain way. Ugh, I'm trying not to be to negative but this game is killing me.

9:49- Hey have you heard about this awesome basketball team we have. This game makes me want to murder myself. Thank you Wanny for showing up when it matters. Such a joke when the games really matter. We are sitting on an International Bowl bid right now.

9:56- Shady is a fantastic player. Again Bob Davey is blowing my mind at his crap announcing

10:06- I understand Erin Andrews is extremely hot and I completely agree but she makes some of most odd points a sideline reporter could. I imagine it is quiet at Nippart Stadium right now because it is crazy cold and they have dominated us. Who could possibly make noise in this cold, the SEC and Big 12 rarely have a game under 45.

10:10- Good defensive stand and special teams. I love Davey's pronunciation of Tag's last name, you are from Western PA you didn't like the Pens in the early 90s Davey?

10:15- Stull has the worst arm I have ever seen. No good and this game is over. Rule number 1 never run with your head down.

10:20- This is such an embarassment for the program because of how bad this game has played out. Bob Davey needs to be put on Monday Night Football though, I enjoy his mistakes. They make the games more fun.

10:27- Fantastic Dorin but this game is well lost.

10:31- It is over and now we sit with marquee wins over South Florida and Notre Dame, that is why Wanny makes the big bucks. This season has been exactly what I thought the bare minimum could have been. We all could have coached us to 7-3 with our talent disparity but whatever this is what we will have. A bowl apparently is an accomplishment when we had a coach who got us to a bunch of bowls but he was ran out of town on a rail.

10:41- This is my last comment they are rushing the field because they beat us. A program that has been lead into the ground by a coach who lives in a fantasy world. This whole thing blows my mind that they would be impressed at beating us. Wanny is the biggest dinosaur in FBS right now and that is saying something.

Jones,

Drink of choice this evening? I'm going with the Diet Dr. Pepper.

Based on the scores online, it looks like the first two WPIAL games have been pretty boring as well. Any word on how Brock and TJ are playing in the AAA game?

johnny said...

Jones,

A little more detail please just for another minute or two. Some of us out of town are stuck with the Boise St.-Nevada game.

johnny said...

Holy crap! This Boise St. game won't freaking end...

johnny said...

Jones,

Ask and you shall receive. Are Romeus and Sheard out tonight?

John said...

Man those two boobs in the booth are terrible. How many different pronunciations have they said for Greg Romeus. They also just sound clueless in general. Der. It could be worse, we could have lezbo Pam Ward.

johnny said...

Yeah,

Bob Davie maximizing his Moon High School education talking about Greg "Romulus". Either the dude is into Star Trek or he's well versed in Roman History.

Seriously, though, didn't those rubes say something about Sheard and Romeus being out? I saw Greg in there late, but is Sheard playing or not?

I enjoy this Nickelback commercial alot. Good stuff. I totally forgot about the comments section tonight. Remember people I'm almost full blown retarded.

Wow, Pitt is looking awful! Who would have guessed that?

(looking around)

Anyone?

(looking at self now)

Anyone else?

D-line coming up like a half-step too slow. Give credit to Pike, though. He's elusive.

J Jones said...

This game is killing me and Bob Davey needs to be murdered for saying Pike is in Matt Ryan's league.

johnny said...

Vomit...

I feel like the secondary has regressed over the season and Stull has continued to throw off his back foot and float passes. Overall, I can't deny that we are also being out-coached at the moment. Stull is not the kind of quarterback who can sling it down field for three scores.

Oklahoma is a machine. I can't wait to see them and Florida dance.
Noles 24-0 over Maryland for anybody scoring at home.

J Jones said...

Oklahoma has totally punched their ticket to the title game tonight. That Texas loss means absolutely shit now. Florida-Oklahoma is going to be an amazing BCS Title game.

I love the kid at FSU getting the Rhoads Scholarship.

johnny said...

Jones,

Myron Rolle is a hell of a kid. He graduated in only 2 1/2 years and is actually pursuing a Master's Degree in Public Administration with plans to eventually go to med school. Basically, he's posturing himself to be the Surgeon General.

I totally want to see him take the scholarship, get drafted this year, and come back to play football in 2010. His resume will eventually look like this guy, which is a pretty elite company to keep.

J Jones said...

Rolle needs to take the scholarship and get drafted. Nothing but respect to that guy, he is what college athletics should be about. I hope he makes a move into public office at some point. I'm amazed at that level of commitment from an athlete with all that pressure.

Davey with the mangle of his last name.

J Jones said...

These officials are so slow to the draw on the whistle

J Jones said...

The Big East is the best we employ the worst officials in basketball and football.

johnny said...

Awful penalty. And Davie must not have been around for the Cup years.

johnny said...

Well, looks like The Cat Basket himself may get into this game. Was that a blown route, or would it even have mattered what with the way it was floated?

J Jones said...

I'm 100 percent sure Stull can't throw a ball 30 yards

johnny said...

Every time that I say Stull flat out sucks, and I'm sure that I've done it no less than 4 times on this board, he comes out a leads a ballsy drive or guts out a win. I'm operating under the assumption that he sucks from now on. I really hope that the QB competition is open this spring, but I'm not optimistic.

J Jones said...

Spring we will have Sunseri, Stull, and Bostick. Don't listen to the yinzer love of Sunseri. I have stood next to him and he is barely 5'10. He has no arm too but everybody wants him to be the next QB because he is from the WPIAL. In a perfect world we fire Cav and put in the Read Option.

John said...

I am getting tired of hearing from Davie how every Pitt player is the 3rd cousin or the next door neighbor of some NFL dinosaur. Who cares?!?

J Jones said...

Hahahaha love it. That is our program now just people who have family members in the NFL.

johnny said...

Does my reverse-Stull sucks jinx apply to recovering onsides kicks? Screw it, our special teams suck...

John said...

Davie, "There is only 2 seconds left just let it go." WHAT. Pitt has the ball and is down by only 7. Davie is a tard!!!!!!!!

johnny said...

What the hell was that ending?

J Jones said...

There should have been a penalty but alas nothing

johnny said...

Agreed,

Shouldn't there have at least been a 15 yard penalty the first time they stormed the field?

Well, screw it, time to get up for the Brawl. Beating down the Hoopies would be a good salve for this wound.

J Jones said...

This program is doomed as long as we have the dinosaur at coach like we do. Fucking bullshit.

johnny said...

I'm willing to let the rest of the season play out and give the staff through next season. Basically, the proverbial "hot seat" is somewhere between the departed G. Rob at 'Cuse and Fat Charlie the Tuna.

HTP!

J Jones said...

ND is a complete mess they need to fire Weis but they gave him an insane contract. We need to get away from our coaching staff, this is such a joke. Although no matter what I will be there next week and caring way too much about the game.

Fuck WVU

johnny said...

You hit it on the head. The insane ten year extension and buyout are the only reasons why Charlie the Tuna has the job security that he does. Plus, in this economy, even ND's boosters won't fork over the coin for that buyout.

My biggest problem with the coaching philosophy isn't that it's too 'vanilla' or whatever, but that too many times, I feel that they don't trust the players to make difficult plays, so they err on the side of conservatism. In other words, they see no point in calling a bold play or formation if there's a probability of a turnover, because in their mind, an interception 40 yards downfield is way worse than a 3 and out and a 40 yard punt.

Damnit, this team has had me hooked since '99 and broken my heart consistently. This loss hurts about as much as the loss at Miami when the potential game-tying TD went like 2 inches over Yogi Roth's fingertips.

Off topic: What do you think the odds are of scoring a reasonable seat to the Sienna game when I get home next month?

J Jones said...

Also ND is nothing compared to what their fans think they are. They wish they could Pitt level recruits but they have nothing at all. ND and their fans still think people care about them and their crappy school in the mid-west. Every big college football school exists south of South Carolina now. ND is a joke and Charlie's NFL offense doesn't work but he was the reason the Pats won the Super Bowl right??

J Jones said...

Call the box office you will get a good seat

J Jones said...

Look at the basketball team. Jamie trusts all of the freshmen with minutes except one. I don't buy the idea that Wanny is here because he loves Pitt so much. Maybe it is because him and his shitty record can only get a job here. He is Foge times 100. People act like we were bad before, we went to bowls and went to the BCS.

johnny said...

Thanks for the heads up on the hoops tic and that was a great point about the shift of power in college football. Even in a good year, the champ from the Big Joke Conference would get slaughtered by USC or the Pac-10 or Big 12 champ. Notre Dame gets less relevant by the day, and I am really curious what their next TV contract will look like.

College baseball, which is actually quite awesome, is another situation like what you describe. Teams from the Big East and Big Ten shouldn't even bother trying to field teams. They are simply outclassed by their Southern and Western counterparts.

johnny said...

That's really the best comparison to make, when you cite to Jamie. I really have an aversion to the Wanny vs. Walt debate, because in many ways, it's irrelevant and in the past. However, like you noted, Jamie is not afraid to get a true Freshman (Woodall for example)or talented Juco (Jermaine Dixon) some playing time, even in a crunch situation. I have no doubt that Dante Taylor will be logging quality minutes well before Big East Play starts next season.

I firmly believe that trusting the players will open things up and let them feel more ownership in the team's wins and losses. It may sound like a cliche', but compare the body language and how loose the basketball team looks off the court compared to the football team on the sidelines.

J Jones said...

I agree I hate the Walt v Wanny debates because there is no point. The main debate is Wanny vs. the rest of the Big East coaching staff. I bring the Jamie part of the argument in because he has turned the basketball program around with nothing. The football program has 9 national titles and a BCS Bowl under our grasps. We are the biggest school in the Big East and only the most staunch Wanny suppporter will tell you we aren't. Enjoy b-ball season because we aren't run by a dinosaur with a loser staff.
