Tradition

As almost every other school has had a song where the fans get up and sing, Pitt seemed to be lacking here. Over the summer, the athletics department searched over many songs trying to figure out: 1. what was a catchy song that most people new, 2. had a part where we could yell lets go pitt, and 3. have it not be too embarrassing. Now after some research the athletics department have come up with a solution. Between the 3rd and 4th quarter, you will hear Neil Diamond's own Sweet Caroline. Yes, the Red Sox use this at their games, but as far as I know, no other college team uses it. Everyone basically at least knows the chorus to the song, and the beats that everyone sings along with are perfect to yell lets go pitt! So during the games when you hear the song and start to sing along, instead of going "Sweet Caroline, bup bup bup" sing "Sweet Caroline, LETS GO PITT!". When we're done with that line we can follow it up not with "Good times never seemed so good, (so good, so good, so good)" but "Good times never seemed so good (Go Pitt, Go Pitt, Go Pitt).

Hopefully this catches on and sticks for a while. I think it could be fun for all of us to sing just the chorus if not the whole song while adding in our Pitt cheers.

Oh yeah, here's a video for it.

how about the band plays the song and the student section sings along with it? the band and the student section have had no interaction during games, and it's easy enough to learn. just play the chorus.

Dudes, Sweet Caroline may be the crappiest song ever made and should only be reserved for drunken girls at the jukebox at Oakland or South Side bars.

Anyway, I can tell you that the Florida State baseball team uses the song during the 7th inning stretch.

Enjoy the season and for all the Freshmen reading this, the lyrics that you won't initially understand are "Allegheny Genac, Genac, Genac." You'll know what I mean when you hear it.

The athletics department is trying to pump in more live music. I believe this song will work more when we use the real song so that those who don't know the lyrics can join in at the chorus.

Also, the band used to play Hey Baby, but no one really sang along with it.

The band will have their time, but our new traditions will take priority too.

Also, later in the week i'll be doing an article about Pitt traditions lining up everything for the freshmen so that they aren't completely out of the loop when it comes to our chants and cheers.

I say give it a chance. People know the song and seemingly enjoy screaming the chorus off-key in bars so this could catch on. At least they are trying to include the students more in the game.
